Ruth Salmons

Bench Cover
This piece is the bench cover for a bench that belonged to my mother’s dressing table.  The cover she had put on it, perhaps 40 years ago, was looking ragged.

The fabric is 10/2 cotton, in Overshot Patterned Doubleweave, the sett was 24 ends per layer. The original overshot draft is from Bertha Gray Hayes book of miniature patterns, a pattern named, ‘Miriam Hospital”.  My mother’s name was Miriam.
Several years ago, a former Weaving Indiana member, Alison Forsythe, did a program on Overshot Patterned Doubleweave and said she realized that it was easy to spread the threading over 8 shafts instead of the usual 4.  That is what I did on this project.  The fabric colors reverse on the other side.

Weaving Indiana guild has exposed me to many more aspects of weaving than I would have discovered on my own.   The camaraderie and encouragement of so many weavers has really made a difference.
